We are delighted to look back on the success of our recent production of Agatha Christie’s A Murder is Announced, which captivated audiences and became one of our most successful runs to date, with over 90% of theatre capacity sold across performances.
Directed brilliantly by Maria Lowcock, this classic whodunnit delivered suspense, drama, and just the right touches of humour, keeping audiences guessing until the very end.
A Classic Agatha Christie Mystery
A Murder is Announced begins with an unusual notice in the local newspaper announcing that a murder will take place at Little Paddocks, the home of Miss Blacklock. Curious neighbours gather, expecting perhaps a game, but what unfolds is something far more sinister.
When the lights go out and shots are fired, the “announcement” becomes a shocking reality. As secrets unravel and tensions rise, it becomes clear that everyone present may have something to hide.
With the arrival of the sharp and observant Miss Marple, the mystery begins to untangle, but not without plenty of twists, red herrings, and classic Christie intrigue along the way.
A Talented Cast Bringing the Story to Life
This production featured a fantastic ensemble cast who brought depth, character, and tension to every scene:
- Miss Blacklock – Jo Longstaff
- Miss Marple – Anne Roberts
- Julia Simmons – Emma Simpson
- Patrick Simmons – Cameron Wallace (with Ian Hanmer stepping in for two performances)
- Phillipa Haymes – Lissy Rawlings
- Mitzi – Sarah Carter
- Mrs Swettenham – Alison Hunter
- Edmund Swettenham – Josh Bowes
- Miss Bunner – Wendy Church
- Inspector Craddock – Glyn Casswell
- Rudi Scherz / Sergeant Mellors – Daniel Hall
Each cast member played their part in building the tension and atmosphere that makes this play such a beloved classic, while also delivering moments of warmth and humour that balanced the darker themes beautifully.
Atmosphere, Suspense and Standout Direction
Under the direction of Maria Lowcock, the production struck a perfect balance between suspense and storytelling. The pacing kept audiences engaged throughout, with each scene carefully crafted to reveal just enough to keep everyone guessing.
The intimate setting of our theatre worked wonderfully for this style of drama, allowing the audience to feel fully immersed in the mystery unfolding at Little Paddocks.
